My love of the Luci lights by MPOWERD is no secret, I have spoken of them in several other posts. I have briefly mentioned some of the perks, however I finally want to give a proper review and show you just why these little lanterns captured my heart.
While the product is amazing on its own, it is also the mission of the company itself which I find the most remarkable. Sometimes finding a product you love is the easy part, but also finding a company that you truly want to support is seemingly difficult. Thankfully more conscious companies are on the rise, and are striving to do their part to better the world around them. This is why I love MPOWERD, beyond just the product they make.
So what is it about a simple light that is so impressive? Though MPOWERD offers several different models, I have the Luci Outdoor 2.0. This is the second, improved edition of the original model. I have mentioned that I not only take this camping with me, but keep it on my day bag as well in case of an emergency. Having a headlamp and flashlight is recommended as well, but should I get lost and have to spend unplanned nights in the wilderness, having a light to set up in my “camp” would be ideal.
4.25″ when inflated 1″ when collapsed
Coming in at 4.4oz it isn’t exactly light as a feather, so for ultralight backpacking it may take up more weight than one would prefer. However it definitely has a leg up over many other lanterns I have used, and I don’t notice the weight on my bags.
The biggest feature is the packability, since it collapses to a mere 1×5 inches. When the time comes, amid flashbacks of growing dizzy blowing up inflatable furniture, you simply inflate it by blowing into the little nozzle.
It is solar powered, of course! The little panel on the front is enough to provide hours of light, and is easy to charge. 7 hours of sun provides 24 hours of light, which I feel is a pretty efficient trade off! I hang it on my bag when hiking or lay it out in the sun when I’m settled into a campsite (or even at home before the trip) so that it is fully charged by the time the sun sets. I have even set it in the rear window of my car on long trips to ensure a full battery. Not only are you saving money by not running through batteries , but you’re also reducing waste.
It has a strap on both the top and bottom, and the bottom strap is adjustable. You can unbutton it to wrap it around tree branches, rope, etc. It also allows you to hang items from the bottom of the lantern if necessary. We like to hang a light over our wash basin, so we hang our hand towel from the light to ensure easy access and visibility.
It is weather and waterproof! Should you get wet crossing a river or get caught in a sudden rain storm, you need not panic about your lantern shorting out. It can also withstand temperatures ranging from 15°F – 122°F which allows you the freedom to take it on almost any trip.
1000 mAh Lithium-Ion Polymer Battery
10 cool white LEDs, 75 lumens
There are 3 brightness settings, and one emergency flash setting. This allows you to adjust the lighting as needed to conserve battery, and you cannot have too many emergency beacons!
Though I only have the one model, they offer several different options to suite your needs. They have smaller sizes, a “frosted” finish for softer lighting, colored lights, and more. And they aren’t limited to camping, I’ve seen them used in beautiful outdoor seating areas, weddings, and various other settings where they added a lovely atmosphere.
The aim of MPOWERED is not only to provide convenient lighting for us campers, but to also address the need for clean and affordable energy in developing and disaster struck regions. They partner with non-profit organizations all around the world, and their Give Luci program allows you to purchase lights specifically for donation. Rather than receiving the product yourself, it is sent directly to one of the organizations they work with.
A partial list of partners on their site includes:
ST JOHN RESCUE
SAVE THE CHILDREN
INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS
KIDS OF KATHMANDU
They’ve stated that their lanterns particularly offer a safer, cleaner, and overall more affordable alternative to kerosene lamps, which are still commonly used in regions without easy access to electricity.
Some of the other benefits of utilizing their lights in these areas include:
- Children (and adults) being able to study at night
- Safer conditions for women after sundown
- Health clinics being able to stay open later to care for patients
- More productivity for business owners and entrepreneurs
Right now, with the recent disasters here in the US and around the world, they are currently offering their Give Luci purchases for nearly 50% off. Regularly priced at $14.95 they are currently on sale for $7.50, allowing for the possibility of more donations for disaster relief. This not only benefits the people living in the affected areas, but the relief workers who struggle to provide assistance, and the desperate rescue efforts that can’t afford to stop when the sun sets.
They also offer a coupon code (GETLUCI) which gets you 20% off of your first purchase, and this deal is always valid (from what I can tell).
I love to follow their social media as well, the unique images and stories are always a delight to see on my feed. Not only do they provide images from customers of amazing places they take their lanterns, but they also share accounts of their efforts around the world.
So while for many this is a product that may simply add more convenience to our leisurely activities, for others around the world it offers new opportunities and has the potential to help save lives. So I ask you all, especially in the spirit of the coming holiday season, to give the gift of light to those who need it most.
